EDUCATION FOR HUMAN RENEWAL
View through CrossRef
The twenty-first century stands at a defining moment in human history. While unprecedented advances in science, technology, and global connectivity have transformed education and expanded opportunities for human progress, humanity continues to confront profound challenges, including ethical uncertainty, social fragmentation, environmental degradation, inequality, mental health concerns, and a growing disconnection from self, society, and nature. These realities invite a fundamental question: Can education do more than prepare individuals for careers? Can it also prepare humanity for a wiser, more compassionate, peaceful, and sustainable future?
This book is founded on the conviction that the true purpose of education extends beyond the acquisition of knowledge and professional competence. Education fulfils its highest calling when it nurtures the whole human being by awakening consciousness, cultivating character, developing wisdom, strengthening ethical responsibility, and inspiring lives of compassion, service, and global citizenship. In this broader sense, education becomes a lifelong journey of Human Renewal.
Education for Human Renewal presents a proposed Universal Philosophy of Spiritual Education, developed through an interdisciplinary synthesis of educational philosophy, psychology, human development, consciousness studies, values education, leadership, peace education, sustainability, and contemporary educational research. Rather than replacing existing educational traditions, it seeks to integrate their enduring strengths within a coherent philosophical framework capable of addressing the educational needs of the twenty-first century.
The inspiration for this work has been drawn from the nearly ninety years of spiritual and educational service rendered by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University through its unique system of Rajyoga Education. Its emphasis on self-awareness, meditation, character formation, values-based living, and selfless service has profoundly influenced my understanding of education as a transformative journey. At the same time, the philosophy presented in this book has been developed as an independent scholarly contribution through critical reflection, interdisciplinary research, and academic synthesis. It is intended as an inclusive educational framework that encourages dialogue, research, and educational innovation across diverse cultures, educational systems, and religious traditions.
A central contribution of this work is the Universal Human Renewal Framework (UHRF), an original conceptual framework that presents education as a progressive journey through four interconnected domains—Personal Renewal, Relational Renewal, Societal Renewal, and Global Renewal. The framework proposes that meaningful educational transformation begins with the renewal of the individual, extends to relationships, strengthens communities and institutions, and ultimately contributes to Human Flourishing, Human Renewal, and World Renewal.
The thirteen chapters of this volume have been carefully organised as a coherent intellectual journey, progressing from the need for educational renewal to its philosophical foundations, conceptual framework, practical applications, research agenda, educational policy, and future vision. Together, they seek to reconnect education with its highest purpose—the holistic development of the human being and the flourishing of humanity.
