Profesor Rudolf Jamka i utworzenie Instytutu Archeologii UJ

The Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University was established in 1971 as a result of the merger of the Department of Polish Archaeology and the Department of Mediterranean Archaeology. This was made possible by the efforts of the archaeologist Professor Rudolf Jamka, head of the Department of Polish Archaeology, and a group of his students. The newly founded Institute also obtained a new seat—the medieval building of Collegium Minus. However, the history of archaeology at the Jagiellonian University reaches much further back, to 1863, when Józef Łepkowski obtained his habilitation and began lecturing in medieval archaeology. The authors of this volume, published to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute, explore all three of the themes outlined above: the history of university archaeology in Kraków, the history of the building that now houses the Institute of Archaeology, and above all the professional activity and scholarly output of its founder, Professor Rudolf Jamka (1906–1972).
