Abstract
Mohandas Gandhi defeated the most powerful empire of his time with a handful of salt. Enslaved by the British Empire for the better part of two centuries, the people of India were able to free themselves without resort to arms. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with James Lawson, John Lewis, and others, were able to claim for African Americans rights they had never enjoyed in America, but had been promised in the United States Constitution and elsewhere. Such things are possible through nonviolent civil disobedience. This entry will define civil disobedience, detail the lives of two practitioners of civil disobedience, offer current examples of the use of civil disobedience, and conclude with an enumeration of key concepts of civil disobedience.
