Han Qi : Scientific Patronage and Political Career. Li Guangdi between the Emperor and Mei Wending
This article tries to analyse Li Guangdi 's role in the history of sciences during the Kangxi's reign. It points out that he not only played an intermediary role between the Kangxi emperor ant the mathematician Mei Wending, but also played a leading role in attracting the emperor's attention and favor for the savant. It was under his patronage that Mei Wending completed his work Doubts on the Calendrical Sciences and that a group of savants formed by Mei Wending played an essential role in the establishment of the Mathematical School during the compilation of Western scientific books. It also points out that sciences were very important factors in Li Guangdi 's political career : they helped him to obtain the grace of the emperor because his interests in sciences met the needs of the emperor.
