John Sheppard and the anatomy of crime in D. Defoe’s late journalism

In the 18th century, there was an unprecedented increase in crime in England. It stimulated an intellectual discussion about the causes of deviant behavior and the reform of penal system. One of its participants was Daniel Defoe, who published the pamphlet " Second Thoughts are Best: Or a Further Improvement of a Late Scheme to Prevent Street Robberies" (1729). Identifying the causes of the phenomenon, which has no analogues in the historical retrospective, Defoe focused on attempts to romanticize the criminal way of life. But the great novelist himself made a significant contribution to the aestheticization of the crime, creating two biographies of the most famous English criminal of the XVIII century J. Sheppard. We present a comparative analysis of “The history of the remarkable life of John Sheppard” and “A narrative of all the robberies, escapes etc. of John Sheppard” (1724), construct his biography and show how a real character’s life events are being transformed into a myth that has gained an independent life in collective consciousness.
