In the autumn of 2002, the archaeological department of the Upplandsmuseet carried out a hunting surveillance in connection with district heating in the area around Upper SlottsUnder in Uppsala. A total of about 600 running meters were excavated. These were about 1.5 m wide and just over a meter deep. The pipe works took place largely in untouched land. Parts of the excavation work were carried out without the knowledge of the Upplandsmuseet. Here the section walls have been documented in retrospect. In other places, the excavation has taken place under archaeological supervision.
The submissions found in the chase gave the picture of a relatively sparsely built area from the 16th century onwards. However, a large part of the shaft touched what, according to the historical map material, had been street sheets. The building fittings were mainly made up of cobblestones and cobblestones, but also of remains after walled houses. One of the latter has been identified as the building of Olof Verelius in the 1670s. From find material and context, the submissions have generally been dated to 1600s and 1700s. A pole hole in shaft I that could not be dated could possibly belong to an older phase.
In addition to the building fittings, a cobblestone cracking was found that could be the remains after an alley marked on Olof Rudbeck’s so-called Atlasplan. The plan of Martin Luther King further documented an undeveloped area likely to represent the Sea of Fight or the area around it. Incidentally, relatively extensive fire layers were visible in several of the sections. Most of these have been unable to be tied to any of the known, larger urban fires during the 1600s and 1700s.
Outside the city boundary of the 16th century, no traces of habitation are visible. There were instead cultivation stocks.
