Bead necklace

View through Europeana Collections
The technique for making the sought-after thousand-flower millefiori bead originated in Egypt. The African specimens however are of Venetian origin. To make these beads, glass tubes of different colors are bundled together in such a way that the cross-section shows a certain pattern. The tubes are joined together by heating, after which the whole is stretched. After cooling, the rod is cut into thin slices, which are then rolled around a (usually black) rod of glass, which forms the core of the later bead. The still-warm slices remain attached to this core, and the multicolored rod with black core thus created is later cut into pieces and sanded.DescriptionCord of beads consisting of 245 miscellaneous beads, including 241 disk beads, one bauxite bead, one millefiori bead, two short stripe beads, and two ellipsoid imitation bauxite beads. The main color is yellow; some blue and brownish red.
