Anshan (Tal‐e Malyan)

View through CrossRef
Anshan (Anzan/Anšan) is a geographic name that appears most commonly in the titulary of the Middle Elamite kings – “kings of Susa and Anshan.” Rulers of the early Sukkalmah period also occasionally refer to themselves as kings of Anshan and Susa. Anshan (modern Tal‐e Malyan) was identified on the basis of numerous inscribed brick fragments of king Huteludush Inshushinak (1125–1104 bce ) found on the mound. It lies 500 kilometers southeast of Susa in an upland internal drainage basin of the central Zagros range in the Kur River Basin of Fars Province, Iran. Excavations and survey revealed occupations of the mound in the late fourth through early second millennia bce and during the last centuries of the second millennium bce , the late Middle Elamite period.
