Adult cow heart

View through Europeana Collections
Adult cow (bovine) heart, viewed from the left side if it were in the body. The heart consists of four chambers through which blood flows; two upper chambers (atria; blood enters the heart through these) and two lower chambers (ventricles; blood exits the heart through these). Windows have been cut in the right ventricle (lower left of image) up to the pulmonary artery, in the left ventricle (lower right of image) and in the left atrium (auricle; upper right of image) to expose the inside of the heart chambers. There is a black rod in the left azygous vein (top right of image). The heart measures 27 cm from base to apex. The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood out of the heart to the lungs via the pulmonary artery (the pulmonary artery is also known as the pulmonary trunk). Oxygenated blood returns from the lungs into the left atrium which then passes to the left ventricle so that it can be pumped out of the heart and around the body. Oxygen depleted blood from cells and tissues in the body first enter the right atrium of the heart and then pass into the right ventricle. Wellcome Image Awards 2016.
