Ayurvedic Management of Kaphaja Kasa w.s.r. to Chronic Bronchitis

View through CrossRef
Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to respiratory disorders by addressing the underlying imbalance of Doshas and the obstruction of Pranavaha Srotas. Kaphaja Kasa, one among the five types of Kasa Roga, arises due to the vitiation of Kapha and Vata Doshas, resulting in excessive mucus formation, heaviness of the chest, and productive cough. The condition shows a close resemblance to chronic bronchitis in modern medicine, which is characterized by chronic inflammation of the bronchial mucosa, persistent cough, and sputum production. This case study presents the management of Kaphaja Kasa w.s.r. to Chronic Bronchitis through Shodhana and Shamana Chikitsa. A 48-year-old male patient suffering from chronic productive cough, chest congestion, and mild breathlessness for three years was treated with Mridu Vamana followed by Sitopaladi Churna, Kantakari Avaleha, and Vasavaleha, along with Dhumapana using Haridra and Yashtimadhu. The treatment continued for 21 days, resulting in marked improvement in cough frequency, expectoration, and respiratory discomfort. The study concludes that classical Ayurvedic management can effectively alleviate the symptoms of Kaphaja Kasa (Chronic Bronchitis) by correcting Dosha imbalance, clearing Srotas, and enhancing respiratory function.
