“NAZARA” AND ITS DERIVATIVES IN SAHIH BUKHARI: DENOTATIVE AND CONNOTATIVE ANALYSIS

Semantics is a branch of linguistics that examines the meanings of words. The analysis of meaning within a text is crucial to ensuring an accurate understanding, particularly in religious texts such as the Quran and the Prophetic traditions (Hadith). While numerous studies have focused on the semantics of the Quran, the study of word meanings in Hadith texts remains underexplored. This study aims to identify the denotative and connotative meanings of the word nazara and its derivatives in Sahih Bukhari and to categorize these meanings according to their types. Specifically, the research seeks to differentiate the literal (denotative) meanings of nazara and its derivatives from their contextual (connotative) meanings in Sahih Bukhari. This study utilizes secondary data from Sahih Bukhari by collecting Prophetic sayings (Hadith Qauli) containing the word nazara and its derivatives. The findings revealed that the word nazara and its derivatives not only refer to physical sight but also encompass meanings such as spiritual insight, reflective thinking, and deep contemplation, depending on the context. These connotations highlight the depth of meaning embedded in the language of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which often transcends its literal interpretation. The study concludes that the connotative dimensions of nazara and its derivatives significantly enrich their interpretations, providing a deeper understanding of how nuanced semantic fields operate within religious discourse.
