Medallion

View through Europeana Collections
Fragments of some oval medallion of blank polished jet, or pitch carbon and gagate as it is also called. The badge is now in two parts and about 1/4 of the medallion is completely missing. On both sides of the medallion is gilded figure engraving. On one side, a man is seen turning his face and one arm to the sun, and in the other hand holding a circular, crucified object. The background shows hills with grass and a cottage. On the other side of the medallion is a man who, with hammer and chisel, processes a rectangular boulder. On one side, a windmill is glimpsed. Around the edge of the medallion there is a notch that possibly shows that the object was attached to something.
