Heginric medallion
View through Europeana Collections
Middle part embossed, embossed. - This piece of jewelry, the name of which varies widely in the literature, offers the only contemporary portrait of King Henry I, with which the new dynasty of Liudol fingers (Ottonen) ascended the German royal throne in 919. According to Alfred von Sallet (1898) it can be “an official mark of honor, which the emperor has awarded as a kind of order” similar to the ancient gold medallions. The piece was found in 1887 together with other jewelry (fibles) and numerous coins in Klein-Roscharden in Oldenburg. In 1883 a first and 15 meters away a second find was made in this place. Fund II included this Heginric medallion, the CX medallion (object number 18217651) and two similar worked decorations without images, and 694 coins with closing date after 996. Fund I also contained several silver disk fibulae (without images) and 73 coins after 1002 closing. Since both finds are very similar, one cannot rule out that it is a single depot. This would theoretically enable the Heginric medallion to be associated with Henry II (1002-1024), as treasure I also contained coins of Henry II. Berghaus (1983) therefore does not exclude a representation of Henry II.
Front: Fragment of the chest of Henry I with diadem and coat held above the shoulder (paludamentum) to the right. The medallion surrounded by a broad frame of woven filial wire, which is bounded by an outer pearl bar circle.
Framed: Subsequent with a version. (coin cabinet)
