Abstract
This chapter presents the analysis of awkwardness in terms of social scripts, which serves as the basis for the rest of the book. It begins with a discussion of the etymology of “awkwardness” before giving an analysis of awkwardness as a property: awkwardness is a property of social interactions that arises when one or more parties lacks a script. The phenomenological components of feeling awkward include uncertainty, discomfort, and self-consciousness, each of which is discussed in turn. One concern about analyzing awkwardness as a social phenomenon is that it will force us to revise our ordinary usage, but this worry turns out to be misplaced. While actions, physical movement, and even inanimate objects can still aptly be described as awkward, the chapter argues that people should refrain from applying the label to individuals.
