Comparative analysis of phytochemical composition in different solvent extracts of Salvia hispanica seeds and their biological evaluations

View through CrossRef
Medicinal herbs include significant amounts of useful phytochemicals and minerals. Phytochemicals offer an important role in reducing the occurrence of long-term illnesses, according to studies conducted in recent decades, Salvia hispanica, member of Lamiaceae mint (major food family) is being used throughout the Asia for its nutritive values and delicious cuisines. S. hispanica seeds extracts are prepared three distinct solvents viz. petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. Three different extracts of S. hispanica seeds were quantitatively analyzed for total phenolic content. GC-MS analysis of oil extracted from S. hispanica seeds shows omega-3 in highest amount and it is beneficial for human health. The well diffusion technique was used to test prepared extracts against specific types of pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Antioxidant activity was applied to extracts by DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate). The ascorbic acid (79.10%) demonstrated less scavenging in the model than methanolic seeds extract (83.1%). S. hispanica seeds petroleum ether extract has shown prominent activity against GNB (Escherichia coli) and GPB (Staphylococcus aureus)
