A világkiállítások mindig is különleges lehetőséget jelentettek az építészet számára: olyan kísérleti terekként működtek, ahol az adott kor technológiai, anyagbeli és esztétikai innovációi először ölthettek építészeti formát. Az expo nem csupán kiállítás, hanem manifesztum is: minden nemzet és pavilon az adott korszak önképét jeleníti meg, miközben új építészeti gondolatokat is felvet. A világkiállítások történetében számos olyan épület született, amely később meghatározta az építészet fejlődését, és paradigmaváltást hozott a tervezésben.
