Kazi Nazrul Islam: A Poet of Renaissance and Revolution

Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899–1976), the national poet of Bangladesh, stands as one of the most powerful literary voices in the struggle for political, social, and cultural liberation in Bengal. His poetry and songs—deeply rooted in humanism, justice, and defiance against oppression—reflect a synthesis of revolutionary zeal and spiritual universalism. Known as the “Bidrohi Kobi” (Rebel Poet), Nazrul used his art to protest against British colonial rule, religious intolerance, and social inequality. This paper examines the revolutionary aspects of Nazrul’s poetry, exploring his role as a catalyst for socio-political awakening and his contribution to shaping modern Bengali identity. It also analyses his fusion of Islamic and Hindu cultural elements to promote unity and harmony. Through close textual and contextual analysis, the study highlights Nazrul Islam’s enduring legacy as a poet who transformed rebellion into art and poetry into a weapon of liberation.
