Diversity and ecological importance of tree species in Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Nigeria

View through CrossRef
Trees are essential components of terrestrial ecosystems, providing critical ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, microclimate regulation, soil stabilization, and socio-economic benefits. This study assessed the diversity and ecological importance of tree species across faculties at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State, Nigeria. Using stratified sampling, 1,856 individual trees representing 43 species across 21 families were recorded. Elaeis guineensis (50.7%) was the most abundant species, followed by Mangifera indica (10.1%) and Anacardium occidentale (9.0%). Fabaceae was the most species-rich family (14.0%), followed by Arecaceae and Myrtaceae (9.0% each). Diversity indices revealed that the Faculty of Management had the highest tree diversity, while the Faculty of Law exhibited the lowest. The study highlights the importance of conserving campus tree diversity amid ongoing infrastructural development to sustain ecosystem services and enhance environmental quality. Recommendations include integrating tree conservation into campus planning and promoting community engagement in green space management.
