Advanced Applications of Supercapacitors in Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles

View through CrossRef
The advancement of clean energy technologies is essential for a sustainable future, with a particular focus on energy storage and conversion solutions. The growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) underscores the need for innovative energy storage systems. This chapter delves into the distinct advantages of supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors in the realm of EVs. Supercapacitors are renowned for their ability to deliver rapid bursts of power, making them ideal for acceleration and regenerative braking. However, their application is limited by lower energy density. Hybrid capacitors, however, provide an optimal balance between power and energy density, facilitating faster charging and discharging cycles. This synergistic combination enhances EV range through mild hybrid functionality and boosts efficiency with stop-start systems. Despite challenges in cost and optimization, supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors hold transformative potential for EV performance and efficiency. This chapter offers a thorough analysis of the current state of these technologies, highlighting their exceptional power delivery capabilities and their role in overcoming the limitations of conventional batteries. By exploring the unique strengths of supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors, this chapter underscores their potential to significantly enhance EV performance, efficiency, and overall functionality. As research continues to advance, these technologies are set to become pivotal in the future of electric mobility.
