Introduction to Supercapacitors

View through CrossRef
Supercapacitors are electrochemical devices that store electrical energy in the form of electrical charge. Supercapacitors have gained significant attention from researchers due to their enhanced electrochemical performance, high specific power, fast charging/discharging rates, superior cycling life, and high thermal stability. They act as hybrid devices bridging the energy power gap between batteries/fuel cells and traditional capacitors. These factors make them a flexible and promising alternative for energy storage. Advances have been made in their materials and chemistries, and extensive research has been conducted to address various challenges in supercapacitor management. This chapter presents an overview of various types of electrochemical supercapacitors, such as electrical double-layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors. It also discusses various electrode materials and electrolytes for supercapacitors, industrial applications, research progress, and the future of supercapacitors. Furthermore, the functionalization of supercapacitor electrode materials is summarized. Additionally, the potential applications of supercapacitors, along with insights into recent advancements and associated challenges, are provided in the conclusion.
