Reception and Interpretation

Abstract
Dio Chrysostom’s contributions and responses to the culture of his time form the principal focus of this volume. The purpose of this introduction is to allow readers to set modern views of Dio in the context of a long history of Dionian commentary and scholarship, beginning with the Humanists of the fifteenth century. By looking at some of the aims of Dio’s past editors and translators we shall better understand our own approaches and interests today.
