This entry discusses the interrelation of the research areas of language contact and world Englishes. While language contact is generally acknowledged as a main shaping force of world Englishes both as reified codes and as situationally emerging practices, theories of language contact have only recently started to play a more important role in the theoretical reflections and modelling of world Englishes. After providing an overview of major theoretical advances in the field of language contact, the entry discusses the contributions of language contact theory to the conception of world Englishes.
