Hedda – troll og tragisk skikkelse

Atle Kittang tager afsæt i de modstridende opfattelser af Hedda skikkelsen, både fra samtidskritikken (Georg Brandes, Gerhard Gran, Lou Andreas-Salomé) og fra nyere kritik (Theodor W. Adorno, Harold Bloom). Hedda Gabler er skiftevis blevet fremstillet som dæmonisk destruktiv og som tragisk offer. I opposition til disse ensidige læsninger argumenterer Kittang for et dobbeltblik på Hedda. Hedda er nok en dødsfigur, men dramaet rummer samtidig en heroisk vision om skønhed og vitalitet, der havarerer sammen med dets hovedperson. Som Ibsen selv har udtalt: »hos Hedda ligger dyb poesi i bunnen«.
