The years 1935 - 1943 extensive conservation and restoration work was carried out on Kronoberg Castle Ruin (Swedish Heritage Board 93 in Växjö sn) and in connection with it archaeological studies. They were carried out inside and outside the castle, in the moat, as well as on Stall- and Vaktholmen. The investigations were never reported, but the between 6000 and 8000 finds that emerged included building details, weapons and armour details, hunting and fishing details, utensils for crafts and agriculture, costume fragments and other leather objects, horse handlebars, parts of kitchen and catering objects, as well as everyday objects and personal things. Things that give an image of life in the 14th century to the mid-16th century.
In written material, the name Kronoberg first appears in 1351 as manerio episcopi Kronobergh, thus as the bishop’s main courtyard. The name suggests through the German crown fortification that the estate may have already acquired some simpler form of defence works. However, if manerio episcopi Kronobergh was on the site of the bail, or the site of its nearby barn, is not clear. Only in the 1440s is there written evidence of fortification work in stone on bail and the oldest archaeological find material dates from the first half of the 14th century. However, if an older wooden stronghold may have been built on the island, as well as if the archaeological studies of the 1930s and 40s were indeed made to the bottom of the cultural warehouse, it is unclear.
The oldest bail we know from the site was a castellborg with a corner tower, a stone foundation house, and simpler wooden buildings placed in a square shape. After Gustav Vasa’s reformation and the subsequent peasant uprising that had come to be called for Dackefejden, Kronoberg was no longer a bishop’s stronghold but the center of a royal birth. The bail was therefore reinforced in the 1540s with strong walls, strong corner roundabouts and moat. It became a modern Vasaborg that would prevent domestic rebellions and Danish ravages against the growing central power in Stockholm. However, already in the first half of the 16th century, the importance of the castle was reduced as a border fortress against Denmark. The maintenance was left behind and bricks were broken from the castle, despite the fact that it continued to be the center of the steel keeper and the tax collection in southern Småland. On the occasion of the establishment of the county administrative office of 1634, which was a system whereby public servants were paid instead of goods and farms, the county authorities chose to live in the new public office at Växjö stortorg, or at Kronoberg royal estate. The castle was finally used for administrative tasks or as an economy house, but after the peace in Roskilde in 1658 it should have completely missed its function as a border fortress and in 1681 the castle was completely in ruins (Tuulse 1951)
