The Laran Tree and Its Defoliators

Laran (Anthocephalus chinensis) is a pioneer tree which thrives on logged-over lowland dipterocarp forest. Native to Malaysia and the Indomalesian region, the tree is getting more attention as a possible plantation species following the depletion of tropical timbers. Laran wood has potential to be used for pulp as well as other light industrial material. Planting of Laran is necessary for commercial purposes as the tree is found too scattered in logged-over areas. Major insect defoliators on Laran include Daphnis hypothous, Arthroschista hilaralis, which are both moth caterpillars. A weevil, Hypomeces squamosus is recorded for the first time to feed on Laran. Management of the defoliators is also discussed.
