Conscience and Moral Truth in Joseph Ratzinger

Abstract
This chapter offers a comprehensive summary of Joseph Ratzinger’s treatment of conscience within the context of theological anthropology and moral theology. The concept of conscience is central to Joseph Ratzinger’s theological and pastoral reflection, evolving progressively throughout his writings. Influenced by the great thinkers of Christian tradition, Ratzinger develops an original vision of conscience rooted in Christian personalism and Christocentrism. Main themes of the exposition include: conscience as a barrier against totalitarianism and the dictatorship of relativism, conscience as a window to the truth, anamnesis as the memory of the truth of original love, the relationship between practical knowledge and the virtue of prudence, the ‘home’ for the formation of conscience, and the influence of St. John Henry Newman.
