Enhancing Roleplayer Collaboration and Construction Performance Through Building Information Modeling: A Literature Review
View through CrossRef
The architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is grappling with the pressing issue of limited collaboration between industry roleplayers and slow digital innovation, as evidenced by the sluggish adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies. Despite the potential of BIM to transform construction performance through enhanced roleplayer collaboration, its implementation among some roleplayers remains minimal, indicating a significant digital divide within the industry. This study aims to delve into the literature to establish the quantum of research that has been conducted in the field of industry roleplayer collaboration through the use of BIM, with a focus on the challenges of roleplayer integration, collaboration, and the construction industry's inherent resistance to digital innovation.
Findings through an extensive literature review revealed that the AEC industry, characterized as the least digitized sector, faces unique challenges that hinder BIM implementation. These challenges include a fragmented project environment, an individualistic mindset among role players aiming to maximize personal goals, and the necessity for a collaborative culture. On the other hand, the perceived benefits of BIM, such as improved construction project management processes and design visualization, underscore its potential to address many of these challenges by fostering a more integrated and collaborative project lifecycle.
However, the results from this bibliographic study indicate that very little research has been conducted on roleplayer collaboration throughout the project lifecycle. Data from several studies refer to design collaboration, which involves a limited number of roleplayers at the early stages of the lifecycle. This bibliographic analysis indicated that a mere 30 out of the 5263 publications contain the keywords building information modelling, collaboration, stakeholder, and stakeholder collaboration.
Extant research indicated that recent research in the field of BIM was focused mainly on innovation and technology. By aiming to identify the roleplayer collaboration divide and enhance industry-wide roleplayer integration and collaboration, this study contributes to the discourse on improving collaboration and digital implementation in the AEC industry.
