Abstract Few now remember John Calcott Horsley (1817–1903). Whilst other nineteenth-century artists have been reclaimed by the critics, Horsley’s career is largely forgotten. Yet, before he was twenty he had earned the praise of the cognoscenti for his Rent Day at Haddon Hall (1836). By the time he died, he had been elected a Royal Academician, and served as Treasurer to the Academy. He painted for the new Palace of Westminster, the Prince Consort, and Queen Victoria.
