“Blades Tempered by Wind and Sand, Wuxia Spirit Never Fades”: The Cinematic Aesthetics and Wuxia Commitment of Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert – Interview with Yuen Woo-Ping

Abstract Drawing on his extensive creative experience in wuxia and action cinema, director Yuen Woo-ping offers a relatively systematic account of his creative philosophy and stylistic commitments by addressing such aspects of Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert ( Biaoren: Feng Qi Damo , 2026) as its adaptation intentions, action design, cinematic aesthetics, and the transmission of performance traditions. He also explains the film’s exploratory significance for contemporary wuxia filmmaking. In particular, he emphasizes that wuxia action must conform to realistic logic and integrate organically with the environment and the characters’ personalities, making clear that authenticity is the core criterion of action design. At the same time, he points out that while wuxia cinema should remain faithful to its inner principles, it must also innovate in response to the demands of its historical moment, so that the genre may be revitalized with renewed vitality.
