Camp Management And Its Effects On Human Security IN FCT IDP Camps

View through CrossRef
This study examined Management, human security, and intervention measures in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The rising number of displaced people in Nigeria has raised concerns about their welfare, safety, and access to basic amenities, prompting a thorough review of camp administration and human security actions. The study identified camp management structures, assessed resident human security challenges, evaluated current interventions, determined the roles of government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations, and examined camp management challenges in ensuring human security. In this regard, structured questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data from 225 FCT IDP camp residents in a descriptive study. Hence, to capture respondents’ perceptions and experiences, qualitative responses were investigated thematically, while quantitative data were analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, and mean scores. Local camp leadership/IDP committees (41.7%), NGOs (24%), and government officials (23.1%) operate camps, with foreign agencies playing a minor role. Poor shelter, food, healthcare, insecurity, and unemployment are major human security issues, with mean scores of 3.03 to 3.54. The effectiveness of food aid, water, health services, and skills training was variable. The study concludes that government, NGOs, and international agencies are crucial to camp management, but finance, coordination, and staffing issues restrict service delivery. The study recommends that, to improve camp management and human security, government and partner organizations should improve coordination, finance, access to basic amenities, educational and livelihood programs, and resource distribution.
