Conceptualising Nobleness and Moral Values in Rwandan Proverbs: A Philosophical Inquiry

View through CrossRef
This study explores the concept of nobleness as expressed in Rwandan proverbs (imigani nyarwanda) and examines its philosophical significance within African ethical thought. Proverbs in African societies function as important vehicles for transmitting moral knowledge, cultural values, and philosophical insights across generations. Using qualitative philosophical inquiry and thematic interpretation, selected Rwandan proverbs were analysed to understand how nobleness is defined within indigenous ethical frameworks. The findings indicate that nobleness is not associated with wealth, power, or social status but with moral character demonstrated through humility, wisdom, generosity, patience, responsible speech, and commitment to communal well-being. Rwandan proverbial wisdom portrays ethical excellence as relational, emphasising harmony, mutual respect, and social responsibility as central measures of moral worth. The study further argues that oral traditions constitute legitimate sources of philosophical reflection and ethical reasoning grounded in lived experience. By situating Rwandan proverbs within broader African philosophical discourse, the research highlights their contribution to contemporary discussions on virtue ethics, communal morality, and indigenous epistemologies. The study affirms the philosophical value of oral traditions and underscores their relevance for understanding African conceptions of moral personhood and human flourishing.
