Assessing the impact of digital archives on the biographical records of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa in Bauchi, Nigeria and its relevance to African studies

The paper assesses the impact of digital archives on the biographical records of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, emphasising their significance in African studies. Biographical records are essential for understanding key figures in African history. The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Heritage Centre in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria, has faced challenges with digitisation due to absent of necessary technical infrastructure such as imaging software, computers, scanners, and cameras. This has hindered the conversion of analogue documents into digital formats and complicated the creation of accurate metadata and bibliographic records. To overcome these challenges, a project was initiated to implement modern solutions, including updated computer workstations and the establishment of a digital archive for the centre's heritage collections. This new archive greatly improves accessibility for researchers, visitors, students, and the public, offering detailed entries on Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa’s life. It covers his early life, formative years, and socio-cultural influences, as well as his development as a leader and nationalist. The archive documents his role as a colonial politician and nationalist, essential for understanding Nigeria's transition from colonial rule to independence. It also highlights his contributions to international diplomacy through the Commonwealth, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), and the United Nations. Also, the archive includes insights into his personal traits, family life, and intellectual pursuits through metadata on his personal books. Tributes, honours, and media reactions to his assassination are also featured, providing a multidimensional view of his legacy. This digitisation effort preserves invaluable records and enriches the understanding of Tafawa Balewa’s life, showcasing the broader impact of digital archives in advancing African studies and the importance of collaboration among librarians, scholars, and institutions.
