This chapter continues to apply generational theory to the Fourvière Jesuits by examining their years of religious and intellectual formation during the 1920s. As a preamble to the chapter, there is a discussion of their entrance into the Jesuits in 1913, as well as their formative experiences during World War I, which opened them more fully to Blondelian philosophy. Next, it surveys their initial philosophical exposure to Blondel and Rousselot, as well as the question of the desire for God. Then, the chapter outlines their theological training on Jersey and at Ore Place and their first independent intellectual projects. Finally, it examines the formation of their generational identity. This study will expose the intellectual roots of the Fourvière Jesuits more deeply and contextualize later chapters.
