Recycling and Sustainability of Solar Panels

View through CrossRef
The global adoption of solar energy has been steadily increasing in recent years, driven by the need for renewable and environmentally-friendly power sources. As the installation of solar panels continues to grow, the issue of their end-of-life management has become increasingly important. Solar panels contain valuable materials, such as silicon, metals, and glass, that can be recovered and reused through recycling. However, the recycling of solar panels poses unique challenges due to their complex composition and the relatively low volume of retired panels currently available. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current state of solar panel recycling and its implications for the long-term sustainability of the solar industry. It examines the various recycling technologies and processes employed, the economics of solar panel recycling, and the potential environmental benefits of recovering and reusing the materials. The review also discusses the regulatory frameworks and policy initiatives that have been implemented or proposed to promote the circular economy of solar energy. Furthermore, the paper explores the emerging trends and future outlook for solar panel recycling, including the development of design-for-recycling approaches, the integration of recycling considerations into the solar panel life cycle, and the potential for closedloop recycling systems. The findings of this review can inform policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers in their efforts to enhance the sustainability of the solar energy sector and mitigate the environmental impact of solar panel waste.
Title: Recycling and Sustainability of Solar Panels
