Therapeutic Potential of Vasa (Adhatoda vasica): A Review

Medicinal plants have been used in traditional systems of medicine for thousands of years and continue to play asignificant role in modern drug discovery. Adhatoda vasica Nees, sometimes referred to as Vasa, Vasaka, orMalabar nut, is a significant medicinal plant that is frequently utilized in traditional, Unani, and Ayurvedic medicalsystems. The plant, which is well-known for its pharmacological qualities, including bronchodilator, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and antitussive effects, is a member of the Acanthaceae family. Vasicine,vasicinone, essential oils, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic compounds are the main bioactive substances foundin the plant. Its potential for treating respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchitis, cough, and tuberculosis isgreatly enhanced by these phytoconstituents. Numerous traditional applications of Adhatoda vasica have beenconfirmed by contemporary pharmacological research, which has also shown the plant's ability to treat illnesseslike cancer, neurological disorders, inflammatory diseases, and microbial infections. Furthermore, the herb hasdemonstrated encouraging hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties. Based on the body of research, this reviewprovides an overview of Adhatoda vasica's pharmacological characteristics, phytochemical components,ethnomedical usage, and therapeutic potential. The study also emphasizes the significance of this plant as apossible source of novel medicinal compounds and future research directions.
