N.N. Ogloblin as a researcher of archivistics in the Russian province of the XVII century

View through CrossRef
A well–known Russian historian and archivist of the late XIX and early XX centuries N.N. Ogloblin carefully examined the state of the archives of provincial cities of the Moscow state of the “post-troubled period”. The purpose of the study is to analyze the results and find out the significance of N.N. Ogloblin’s study of the archives of the Russian province of the XVII century. Materials and methods. The work was prepared on the basis of specific scientific methods and analysis of a historiographical fact. Of the specific scientific methods of historical research, the historical-genetic method became the basic one. A systematic approach was also used, in which objects are studied as sources of social information, i.e. as historical sources, the principle of scientific approach, which made it possible to select the archives of the XVII century as objects of study, correlate them with the field of research made by N.N. Ogloblin, and determine the purpose of the study. The principle of comprehensiveness is applied when establishing interrelationships, recording external influences, and excluding random effects. The research was based on information about archives discovered by N.N. Ogloblin (their inventories, data from census, reception, construction, estimate books, minute books of decrees, appointment instructions, signatures to letters, murals to correspondence and books of signature lists, letters, inventories and other documents), as well as materials on the history of government and monastery archives of the XVI–XVII centuries. Results. N.N. Ogloblin’s works reflect archive management, storage methods and the practice of describing documents in the XVII century. N.N. Ogloblin showed how departmental clerks ensured safety of the documentation and that, if necessary or if the archive lost its reference value, its funds were united with new ones or included in the documents of other cities. N.N. Ogloblin reviewed the inventories of documents and information about the archival premises of not only government, but also church archives of Muscovy. The scientist believed that in archivistics of Russia in the XVII century, the external structure of archives was no less important than their internal organization. Conclusions. The state of the archives of Muscovy, as N.N. Ogloblin showed, was an important component of its history. The works of the historian, who studied extensive archives of the Russian province, state a slow development of archivistics in the XVII century. According to Ogloblin, safe-keeping and integrity, accumulation, systematization, relocation and use of documents of existing institutions by departmental officials indicate independence of the archives of the XVII century as structural divisions of the voivodeship administration. The scientist noted that if the archive lost its reference value, it could be divided and even transferred to another city for storage. It was not uncommon, as N.N. Ogloblin showed, to unite old funds with new ones.
