„Teatr o tyle ma dla nas znaczenie…”

The artistic activity of Jan Matejko (1838-93) was focused around the historical- patriotic interests as well as the research passion of mastering the relicts of the past and protecting them against damage. Matejko was developing these interests alongside his artistic talent and as the mature painter he was in position to satisfy his collecting passion and gather a considerable collection. He travelled a lot, visited various museums and famous monuments, and conducted thorough historical and ethnographical studies. The artist is presented here in light of extant letters, memoirs, and a diary by Matejko’s secretary.
