Investigating Shah Rukh Khan’s Digital Fandom
View through CrossRef
Abstract
Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India, is renowned for its vibrant storytelling, elaborate musical sequences, and widespread cultural influence. The rise of digital technologies has transformed fan communities in Bollywood cinema. This article explores the digital fandom surrounding Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, particularly the online fan clubs that emerged in the early 2000s. It examines how digital platforms shape and sustain Shah Rukh Khan’s star image, addressing how these spaces have altered traditional fandom dynamics. While fandom and participatory culture in digital spaces have been extensively examined, limited scholarship addresses their role in Bollywood fandom. This study addresses this gap by using Khan’s fan community, the Shah Rukh Khan Universe, as a case study. It employs a comprehensive qualitative approach to investigate the dynamics of digital fandom surrounding the star. The methodology is bracketed as netnography, which includes ethnographic observation of Shah Rukh Khan Universe activities across social media trends by examining platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook. The user-generated content within this fan community is analyzed thematically to gather insight into fans’ motivations, experiences, and the nature of their fan activities. The research findings suggest that online fan clubs are instrumental in shaping and disseminating the star image of Bollywood celebrities on digital platforms. This transformation underscores fans’ pivotal role in producing, promoting, and consuming films. Concurrently, it highlights how these online fan communities serve as custodians of celebrity fandom, with stars investing considerable effort to engage and maintain their fan base.
