Catenae

Abstract
Catenae are a major form of Greek biblical exegesis practiced in Late Antiquity and Byzantium. Qualifying to be described as “exegetical florilegia,” they reflect the conviction that biblical interpretation should rely on the tradition of the Fathers. Not too much bothered by orthodoxy as a criterion of selection, the catenae have preserved many excerpts from Greek works otherwise lost; but they also deserve to be studied in their own right, as literary and exegetical products of their time.
