Abstract
The Blanc reaction is the reaction for introducing the chloromethyl group into aromatic rings when aromatic compounds are treated with formaldehyde and hydrogen chloride in the presence of zinc chloride. Aliphatic ketones have been found to be chloromethylated in a similar manner. Aromatic ketones carrying at least two alkyl groups could be chloromethylated in this reaction. Chloromethylation of phenyl rings is important for the functionalization of resins. Uncatalyzed chloromethylation of aromatic rings has also been reported. This reaction has been used for organic syntheses.
