Morgenstern var i København i 1827-28, men studien er friere i malemåden end hans studier fra denne periode (jf. værker i Hamburger Kunsthalle) og er formodentlig udført senere. Christoph Heilmann har foreslået en datering inden for de første år efter hans ankomst til München i 1830 (jf. brev af 2. juli 2013).
