English Summary Endodontic disease diagnosed in patients seeking general dental practitioners in Norway 254-7. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of teeth with endodontic disease, factors that cause disease, the incidence of symptomatic cases, the treatment choice and the number of patients referred to a specialist in endodontics. Three hundred and sixteen randomly selected dentists were invited to participate in the study. The participants received an online form with questions about clinical practice related to endodontics taken from a selected week. Ninety-five dentists returned the questionnaire and 87 were included. It was diagnosed endodontic disease in 302 teeth, varying from 0 to16 cases per dentist (average 3.5 cases per dentist). The most frequent cause was caries (40.4 %). Apical periodontitis was diagnosed on 183 teeth (60,6 %). One hundred and eleven teeth (69, 9 %) had symptoms (including teeth sensitive to percussion and palpation and spontaneous pain). Conventional endodontic treatment was planned for 231 teeth (76.5 %) and 21 teeth (6.9 %) were referred to a specialist in endodontics. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that Norwegian dentists on average detected 3.5 teeth with new endodontic diagnosis per week. Caries was the main reason for the pulpal infection and apical periodontitis was the most frequently detected endodontic diagnosis. Many of the diagnosed teeth had symptoms.
