Development and Validation of Online Social Conformity Scale: Integrating Normative, Informational, and Algorithmic Influences in Digital Environments

Existing measures of social conformity were developed within offline interpersonal contexts and do not adequately capture the conformity dynamics that emerge in algorithmically mediated digital environments. This study developed and validated the Online Social Conformity Scale (OSCS), a 20-item instrument measuring three theoretically distinct dimensions of online conformity: Normative Influence, Informational Influence, and Algorithmic Influence. Scale development proceeded across multiple phases using three independent samples for quantitative validation (EFA: N = 286; CFA: N = 246; validity testing: N = 208), supplemented by a qualitative phase involving focus group discussions with young adults. Bi-factor modeling supported a multidimensional structure with items loading on both a general conformity factor and three domain-specific sub-factors. Convergent and discriminant validity (N = 208) were established through theoretically consistent correlations with algorithmic content awareness, critical thinking, misinformation susceptibility, and decision quality. Regression analysis further confirmed predictive validity, with all hypothesized paths reaching statistical significance. The OSCS provides researchers with a psychometrically sound and theoretically grounded instrument for examining online conformity behavior across its normative, informational, and algorithmic dimensions. Implications for digital behavior research, media literacy interventions, and platform design are discussed.
