A hiánygazdaság, a rugalmatlan állami vállalatok árnyékában erősödő piac, a régió többi országát megelőző reformok már a nyolcvanas évek Magyarországán a felemelkedés vissza nem térő lehetőségét teremtették meg azoknak, akik a piacon eladható tudással rendelkeztek, vagy nyitottak voltak ilyet elsajátítani.
Dolgozatunkban két – a rendszerváltás folyamatába ágyazódott – esetet mutatunk be, amikor a szereplők éltek a történelemadta kivételes lehetőséggel, s karrierjük meredeken és gyorsan emelkedett magasra a nyolcvanas évek végén, a kilencvenes évek elején anélkül, hogy a tőketulajdonosi jogosítványok újraelosztásában részt vettek volna. A két eset bemutatása során arra fókuszáltunk, hogy egyrészt mik voltak azok az erőforrások, amik (verseny)előnynek bizonyultak, illetve hogy ezek segítségével milyen módon tudták megragadni a helyzet kínálta lehetőségeket.
