Navigation: A Very Short Introduction looks at the history of navigation, including the distinctive cultures of early navigation. It shows how the adoption of mathematical methods, use of instruments, writing of textbooks, and publication of charts combined to create a more standardized practice. Methods such as longitude-finding by chronometer and lunar distance were complemented by recording courses and reckoning position ‘by account’.
