La sociologie avance grâce au progrès conjoint de la théorie et de la méthodologie. A la diversité des approches théoriques correspond celle des méthodologies. La distinction entre méthodologie "quantitative" et méthodologie "qualitative" s'est estompée ou n'a plus de pertinence. Peut-etre serait-il plus constructif de parler de méthodologie "ascendante" et de méthodologie "descendante", étant entendu qu'elles sont complémentaires et peuvent être combinées en un même projet de recherche. Toutes les méthodologies sont de nature "non universelle", même si chacune convient plus précisément à tel ou tel domaine. L'intérêt de l'analyse multiméthode, c'est qu'elle permet d'obtenir des résultats stables et de jeter des passerelles entre diverses sous-disciplines. On trouvera présentée ici une procédure générale de recherche sociologique en quatre points "classiques" auxquels viennent s'ajouter deux étapes fondamentales qui demeurent souvent non explicitées: la transformation initiale et la transformation finale de l'information au cours du processus de recherche.
