drawing (pencil): ["The Sea Shore"]
View through Europeana Collections
A seascape with multiple boats on the water, several at the water's edge. Figures are visible working on two of the boats. At centre left a woman walks towards the viewer. She wears a dark blouse and long skirt with a white apron and carries a basket on her head, balanced with one hand. The woman and the boats cast long shadows over the rocky shore. The sky is cloudy and grey over the horizon, with a bright break in the clouds at upper centre. This pale light is also reflected in the foreground shallows, creating a soft day-break effect. Signed in pencil at bottom right, 'Thomas Barrett/1896' with line underneath. See also NCM 1958-9
