Reception of Anton Chekhov's Work in the Prose of Lu Xun.

View through CrossRef
The aim of this paper is to reveal the genetic and typological links between Lu Xun's work and Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's prose, using the main provisions of the doctrine of comparative literary studies of A. Veselovsky, V. Zhirmunsky and their followers. In the course of the reading of a large corpus of texts by both writers, we discovered and analyzed works by the Chinese classicist, short stories, novels, which were written under the influence of Chekhov's themes, problems, and poetics, such as, for example, “Notes of a Madman”, “Kun Yiqi”, “The True Story of A-Q”, “Homeland”, “Rabbits and a cat”, “Praying for happiness”, and “Mourning for the gone”. ‘Overlap’ with Chekhov's work is unmistakable. At the same time, typological links, as compared to genetic ones, are, of course, more presumptive. The article identifies the historical, social, cultural and biographical factors that led to the formation of these parallels and artistic adoption from prose to prose. This adoption has not yet been the subject of a special study; its coverage allows us to better understand the links between the two great literatures.
