Beyond the Absurd: The Cultural Significance of Elizaveta Bam by Daniil Kharms

Daniil Kharms's play Elizaveta Bam (1928) is a violent play about a young woman's arrest after a murder she does not believe she committed. To stall her arrest, Elizaveta entangles the two authorities in linguistic quirks, weird stories, and incoherent conversations. This world, both unreal and strikingly real, exposes the deterioration of language and the bipolar system of violence embedded in 1920s Soviet society. If you can’t speak, you don’t exist. Elizaveta's resistance to participating in the dominant culture's conversation can therefore only mean one thing: murder.
