MULTIDETECTOR CT IN EMERGENCY RADIOLOGY: ACUTE AND GENERALIZED NON-TRAUMATIC ABDOMINAL PAIN

Background: Acute generalized non-traumatic abdominal pain is one of the most common causes of emergency department visits and presents a significant diagnostic challenge due to its wide range of underlying etiologies. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential for timely management and improved patient outcomes. Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) has emerged as a valuable imaging modality in emergency radiology because of its high spatial resolution, rapid image acquisition, and ability to provide detailed evaluation of abdominal organs and pathology.
Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of Multidetector Computed Tomography in patients presenting with acute and generalized non-traumatic abdominal pain in the emergency setting.
Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study will be conducted in the Department of Radiodiagnosis at a tertiary care hospital. Patients presenting with acute generalized non-traumatic abdominal pain and referred for MDCT evaluation will be included after obtaining informed consent. Clinical history, physical examination findings, laboratory investigations, and MDCT findings will be recorded. MDCT diagnoses will be correlated with surgical findings, histopathological examination, additional imaging, and/or clinical follow-up wherever applicable. Data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical methods to determine the diagnostic accuracy and spectrum of abdominal pathologies detected by MDCT.
Results: The study is expected to identify the common causes of acute non-traumatic abdominal pain and assess the effectiveness of MDCT in establishing an accurate diagnosis, guiding management decisions, and reducing diagnostic uncertainty in emergency situations.
Conclusion: MDCT is anticipated to be a highly reliable and comprehensive imaging modality for evaluating acute generalized non-traumatic abdominal pain, facilitating early diagnosis, appropriate treatment planning, and improved patient outcomes in emergency radiology practice.
